When it was announced in 2015, the film that would become Spider-Man: Homecomingsounded less than exciting. This would be our third Peter Parker in a decade, emerging shakily from another troubled reboot and the tatters of grand shared universe plans.
But the promise of a Marvel/Sony team-up began chipping away at our reserve, and by the first glimpse of Tom Holland in costume in Captain America: Civil War's trailer we were more than ready to give our new Spidey a chance.

Having seen the film, we're all fully Team Holland. As producer Eric Hauserman Carroll told Empire magazine "We're not making the sixth Spider-Man movie, we're making the first Peter Parker movie."
Here's everything you need to know about our new Spidey, where he's left after Civil War and what to expect from next year's Spider-Man: Homecoming:

Spider-Man: Homecoming release date – Slotting into Marvel Phase 3

The movie will be released on July 5 in the UK and July 7 in the US – making it the fourth film in MCU's Phase Three.
Filming began in June 2016, leading to a brief on-set crossover with the Guardians crew.

Spider-Man: Homecoming cast and director – Another fresh start

We've already mentioned that Tom Holland will be taking over the role as everyone's favourite nerd Peter Parker, making him the second Brit to do so. The Impossible and Wolf Hall actor showed off his acrobatics skills for months, proving that he's the bouncy young man for the job.
Spider-Man co-creator Stan Lee (who chances are will have his regular cameo in the film) has given Holland a firm thumbs up.
"Oh, he's wonderful!" he said during a Q&A at Denver Comic Con. "I was with him the other day. He is great! I can't believe it. It's as if we created a living being to be Spider-Man, and it turned out to be him."

Spider-Man is shaping up to have an unusually huge cast, mixing talented young actors with Hollywood stalwarts.
My Cousin Vinny's Marisa Tomei also had a cameo in Civil War as the latest incarnation of Peter's increasingly youthful Aunt May. We hope she has more fun than Sally Field.
    Vulture in Spider-Man Homecoming trailer
After some to-ing and fro-ing, Michael Keaton was confirmed to be playing the movies villain Adrian Toomes – aka the Vulture.
Disney starlet Zendaya is on the cast as Parker's schoolmate Michelle (short-lived supporting Spider-Man character Michele Gonzales, maybe?). She has denied that she is secretly playing Spider-Man's girlfriend Mary Jane Watson, any sort of love interest, or even really Peter's friend.
    Zendaya in Spider-Man: Homecoming
Grand Budapest Hotel's Tony Revolori in on board as Peter's high school nemesis Flash Thompson, alongside Beast of No Nation's Abraham Attah, Better Call Saul's Michael Mandoas Matt Gargan, the Scorpion and 4th Man Out's Laura Harrier as Liz Allan, who looks to be the love interest that Zendaya is not. Six-time Emmy winner Tyne Daly has also signed up for the film.
Future Dark Tower actor Michael Barbieri is on board – and we're glad to say that the rumours that he would play a role 'based on' Korean American character Ganke Lee have been debunkedThe People vs OJ Simpson's Kenneth Choi will also make an appearance, as well as comedian Hannibal Buress and Silicon Valley's Martin Starr, who play Peter's teachers.
And 15-year-old Australian actress Angourie Rice – who more than held her own opposite Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe in The Nice Guys – has joined the cast in yet another unknown role, presumably as another of Parker's classmates. Fingers crossed she doesn't have to be the ill-fated Gwen Stacy.
Prometheus's Logan Marshall-Green will be a villain, as will Orange is the New Black's Michael Chernus, who is apparently appearing as D-list Spider-Man villain The TinkererFargo actor Bokeem Woodbine is playing another bad guy, the Shocker.

JJ Totah, Jorge Lendeborg Jr and Selenis Leyva are also on board, as is newcomer Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds (traditionally a Daily Bugle Report but in this case playing one of Peter's best friends at school).
And, in a piece of bittersweet news, Spider-Man superfan Donald Glover will also be featuring in the film. The Community star was a favourite to play the superhero, but he obviously won't be Parker. He isn't the other Spider-Man, Miles Morales, either – it seems that he is playing Aaron Davis, the Prowler, who does have a connection to Morales.
Zendaya arrives at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards
Robert Downey Jr's Iron Man also has a major role in the movie, building on Tony Stark and Peter's first meeting in Captain America: Civil WarJon Favreau's Happy Hogan is along for the ride, too, and there are two surprise cameos awaiting us.
And there may be another secret character lurking in the background.
Behind the camera, we have relative newcomer Jon Watts. He directed 2014's surprisingly funny Clown and 2015's Cop Car. The excellent performances from the young actors in the latter presumably helped bag him the job on Spider-Man.
Writing duo John Francis Daley and Jonathan M Goldstein (VacationHorrible BossesCloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2) have been working on the script.

Firstly, you'll be pleased to hear that we won't be subjected to a third origin story, with Watts observing that "there are only so many times you can kill Uncle Ben". You are not wrong, Jon.
The film will be a "coming-of-age high-school movie", with Peter pitched as quite a bit younger than Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield's not-really-very-teenage incarnations. Holland's Spider-Man will be about 15 years old, and we've been promised a John Hughes vibefor some light-hearted teen drama. We couldn't be more behind this.
Civil War introduced us to a Spider-Man that has had his powers for about six months. Uncle Ben is presumably dead and buried, and he's living with Aunt May in a high-rise in Queens (rather than the usual suburban semi).
Iron Man features as his mentor in the movie, and tries to discourage Spider-Man from taking on threats that are too big for him. That definitely includes the Vulture, the leader of a gang that salvages advanced and alien technology
